Description
Malayer rugs were woven in and around the small town of Malayer, located in-between larger northwestern Iranian (Persian) cities of Hamadan and Arak. While they feature characteristics consistent with other Hamadan province styles – single-wefted construction, wool and cotton construction – Malayer carpets reflect the mixing pot of their influences from nearby rug-making cities. Varied designs can include striking anchored medallion motifs or quiet repeating patterns paired with richly detailed borders. Such village-constructed rugs are most often found in the runner, scatter rug, and gallery sizes. Larger room-sized rugs were likely woven on commission. Malayers’ soft colouration and charm have made them a recently beloved choice for designers and homeowners alike. Pattern, colour variation, and signs of wear with vintage items are normal.
